RYE HOUSE

Rye House in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire is a former fortified manor house, located in what is now the Lee Valley Regional Park.

The gatehouse is the only surviving part of the structure and is a Grade I listed building.[2]

The house gave its name to the Rye House Plot, an assassination attempt of 1683 that was a violent consequence of the Exclusion Crisis in British politics at the end of the 1670s.

In 1517 William Parr was living at Rye House;[6] it was the main family home for the Parrs, Catherine Parr and Anne Parr also, after their father's death, until 1531.[7][8] It passed in 1577 to Joyce Frankland from her husband William.[9] The Frankland family sold it to the Baeshe family, in 1619.[4]

Husband, son-in law

The Rye House Plot of 1683 was a plan to assassinate King Charles II of England and his brother (and heir to the throne) James, Duke of York. The royal party went from Westminster to Newmarket to see horse races and were expected to make the return journey on 1 April 1683, but because there was a major fire in Newmarket on 22 March (which destroyed half the town), the races were cancelled, and the King and the Duke returned to London early. As a result, the planned attack never took place.

A very famous piece of WARE in LONDON… mentioned by SHAKESPEARE!

The POST WOOD & WARE trail

WARE to WANDER WALK

Stone to mark the source of the New River at Chadwell Spring. The water then flowed by a winding route, 40 miles to Islingon in London.
St Chad's Well is located between Ware and Hertford. It can be seen from the A1170 connecting Ware to Hertford. Look for a small gateway on the right if travelling from Ware. The Chadwell is down this path, at the nearby house here one should ask permission to view the site.

The NEW RIVER

Not another river!

Now, what about 28 miles, or 45 Kms., back to London, following the NEW RIVER PATH?

HERTFORD

THE SIX TEMPLARS PH

The Poor Fellow Soldiers of Jesus Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, popularly known as the Knights Templar, was the first and one of the most famous of the Christian orders. Founded for the protection of pilgrims visiting the Holy Land (Jerusalem), it existed for approximately two centuries. The Templars had several houses in Hertfordshire. When the order was suppressed in 1307, six Templars were arrested in Dinsley, near Hitchin. Four of them were imprisoned for six months in Hertford Castle which stood to the rear of the pub.
